The Aztec civilization was the most literate society in all of the Americas. So why do many Mexican-American children do not know how to read well? Reading is the most important key to all knowledge, and knowledge when enforced by action leads to empowerment. It is of extreme importance to La Raza, to make sure that all of our children, become good readers, because it is the key to all future success, in whatever field of employment they choose to do in life. Here is a suggestion that may help. When I was little about six years of age I began trying to read comic books, since most kids love pictures with stories. When I grew older I liked reading them them so much, that I began to buy my own comic books,so thats how I became hooked on reading. Also at about 10 years of age my grandfather, would not let me go out and play, unless I read to him about a page in Spanish out of a small book. So that is how I learned how to read Spanish. But the foundation was laid, and as a young adult I could read just about anything, even newspapers.Result, when I decided to go to college after having dropped out of high school as a young man,the people who tested me were shocked to find out, that my reading level "was well above the normal college reading level, and so was my IQ! Now I can say with pride that Superman,Batman,Donald Duck, and Bugs Bunny taught me to read, huh? And also made me smarter at the same time, dang that wascally wabbit,LOL!
