I say it just depends on what demographic market you wish to target. These days when you are promoting a product or a service like coffee, you have to target as "large a general market as possible. Or else, you can very well risk offending and alienating a large segment of your customer base. So unless, you have a product or service which is suited " only to a specific market ," it is generally better to have a large as market as possible! Successful Corporations cannot afford to lose business! Cause business is only about Mo Money!
Perception is everything in business, and good publicity is vital to a business, its called 'company image," because its the way that the public see's you.Whether a boycott by the Christian movement actually takes affect on business at Starbucks, has yet to be seen, but generally speaking most business tries to avoid this type of negative publicity. Personally I would not use any kind of a semi-erotic logo to promote a general market product. Further more I would not even use it to promote even a topless club. (Notice how most strip clubs try to remain low key, ) no naked mermaid cups to promote the biz, etc. The perception of a parent having to explain to their kids why they like to keep cups with a naked mermaid around them all the time may be to much for some parents!
Since Marketing is one of my majors,I thought I would just add my 2 cents in.
