"The Norteños began in the late 1960s as Nuestra Familia, a California prison gang that broke away from the Mexican Mafia, allegedly to escape internal corruption. They adopted the red flag and huelga bird symbol from Cesar Chavez's movement in response to the stereotype that all Northern California gangsters were farmers. Their goal was to protect the integrity of the cause: to fight for racial equality.
Ironically, they ended up fighting their own people. While some gang education includes Chicano history and Brown Pride overtones, many young Norteños have no clue about their background. And in a strange local twist, they are now attacking the very people they originally formed to defend: migrant workers."

It talks about in the article how the "line" was originally in Fresno, where anything south of Fresno was mostly Sureno territory......Surenos have been inching up over the years and I would say they are getting up to Stockton. Stockton used to be one of the most Norteno dominated cities but its not like that anymore... Personally, I think this is the biggest problem we have in the Chicano community.
The article has comments and opinions from former gang members and I agree that the original methods of keeping kids out of gangs and jail are not working, I don't think they ever did. It touches up on some of the things that should be done to keep kids away from that. Which reminds me if you are interested in further insight on what works within the norteno/sureno community as far as getting the message across, I would have to recommend "Chicano Prisoners". Im recommending it because its the one book that I consider to be truth as far how vatos in a set socialize...
I mean its obvious that everyone has a problem with authority but gangsters take it to the next level, so none of that authoritan figure crap is gonna work on these kids. "Chicano Prisoners" covers that and explain how people who call the shots in Prison get the message and socialize with others without stepping over the line as far as "ordering" a person what to do.

Well, I'm form Cali and there is a lot of gang activity!! So many people dying, over here we had about 80 deaths in Compton in like 3-4 months!! It's sad too see many people dying for no apparent reason. There are many people, organizations, and groups that are trying to get these people off the streets, but nothings seems to happen. Nobody really seems to get through to these kids! And I mean kids, there's is literally as young as 11 year olds in gangs. The older members recruit the younger one's and the only reason they do it, is because the younger one's are stupid enough to do the dirty work for them!! Since most youngster get kicked out of their homes, they'll end up killing for a couple of bucks!!
We have alot of Sureno and Norteno activity!! But here it's mosly fighting over different blocks that none of them own!!
I try to get involve myself because I come from a family of gang members and it hurts to see them fight and end up dying for something as stupid as territory!! I've been around this all my life and it's just got worse. There's nothing we can do, but learn to survive. Recently, many people have been getting killed for fun.
Anywho, interesting article Carlos, I will check out the book!

I agree. Many do want out!! There's many guys that I know that just joined to survive! They want the protection. No matter whether you're from a gang or not, you'll get hit up. And when you say you don't bang, then they think you're lying so you get jumped or shot at. So many just join for the protection. In order to get the protection, there's things you have to do for them. So many get in gangs, get use to the lifestyle, and never get out. Many believe that there's no way out and that there's no better life. But that's complete crap. It's a "hard life", but not the only life.
My little cousin is in a gang and he's only 14. He has shot people, sold drugs, and stolen things. He got kicked out of the school district when he was only 12. His older brother, just got released from Camp and is now doing nothing with his life. But i know my little cousin doesn't want that kind of life, but it's the one he's chosen because he feels it's the only choice. Their mom (my aunt) doesn't care about them and their father is not around.I try to tell my cousins that they have more options, but I've become hopeless. And it kills me to know that I can't protect them forever.

| ...Sigh, sadley these days there are a lot of little kids getting involved in gang activity, it's pretty sad to see a 11 year old boy walking hitting up people who are much older then them, all for respect. That's it, it's all about getting respect, that's how it's been for a long time. Nortenos and Surenos. This all started over the Nortenos being treated like shit by the Mexican Mafia so they did thier own thing. It's stupid to think about it, but each time a chicano kills another chicano..it's makes me mad. We're supposed to be united, not killing eachother, not hurting each other. I don't see why joining a gang would make you any tougher. A gangmember trys to act crazy with me and I'll beat the shit outta him..no hesitation. So many anti gang orginizations out there try to help, but does little to prevent it. Cholos/Cholas need to understand that a gang life isn't worth it. More than half of major prisons are filled with hispanic gangmembers. Dude, like wtf? It's crazy to even think about. In a cholo's life you either get sent to prison or you end up getting buried six feet under..all over some bullshit. All over defending your barrio. This is just ridiculous. Sur 13, Norte 14, all that shit makes our latin community weaker, it gives US.."REAL HISPANICS" a bad reputation. I live in Los Angeles, it's as ghetto as ghetto can be. I mean, you can't even walk to the fucking liquor store without getting hit up by someone, sometimes it becomes worse..you end up getting jumped and all your shit is taken. Or shanked, or shot at because they think you're a gangmember by the way you look or dress. They don't care who you are, they just do it. I'ma be real. I been hit up so many fukin' times because of the way I look and dress, even though I ain't into all that gang shit..I still get asked "where I'm from" but it's just how it is in Los Angeles. People are used to it. Drive by's, killings. It's not worth it man. I been jumped like about 4 times in my life. All over these silly ass bitches trying to take over what isn't even thiers in the first place. The streets aren't thiers, the streets are owned by the government...dumb ass idiots talking about "we takin' over los angeles" shut the fuck up you dumb ass bitch, this was never rightfully yours in the first place. LOL. My point is, all this isn't worth it, we shouldn't be fucking up our community then it already is. All this shit needs to stop, but I doubt it is. It's getting bigger each and everyday. Recruiters are recruiting, Killers are killing, Stabbing, Stealing...just fucking up our neighborhood. It's insane.

I'm from South LA, the ghetto side of LA, and believe me when I say this but the gang members over here are just as ignorant as in anywhere else in the US. I consider most gangmembers cowards because they attack in groups instead of on thier own. It's a shame because all they are doing is destroying our own raza and bringing shame to thier familias. Think about it, our parents, and grandparents risked thier asses to get across the border then they worked thier asses off to put food on the table and a roof above our heads only so they can repay them back by becoming drug dealers, murderers, and vandals.
