Girl Killed After 'Video Game Violence'

Postby iPedro on Thu, Dec 20 2007, 11:54 PM

<img src="http://www.juarol.com/img/news/Trujillo_lamar.jpg" align="left">Two teenagers have been charged with killing a seven-year-old girl by beating her to death with moves from the Mortal Kombat video game.

Lamar Roberts, 17, and Heather Trujillo, 16, killed Trujillo's half-sister Zoe Garcia while they were babysitting her, prosecutors have said.

They have been charged as adults in Colorado on one count each of felony child abuse causing death, state prosecutor Robert Miller said.

Police reports say Zoe lost consciousness and stopped breathing after the teenagers hit, kicked and body-slammed her, imitating moves used in the video game.

Trujillo and Roberts reportedly tried reviving the girl by putting her under running water and attempting CPR before they called her mother and paramedics.

However, the girl died in hospital.

An autopsy showed she had a broken wrist, more than 20 bruises, swelling of the brain, and bleeding in her neck muscles and under her spine.

Roberts said he was downstairs playing video games while the sisters wrestled upstairs, police said. But a witness quoted in a police affidavit said Roberts told her he had kicked the girl.

The witness told police that Roberts said Zoe had told them to stop wrestling.

According to the affidavit, when the witness asked why they didn't stop, he responded: "I don't know; I was drunk."

If convicted, the teens could be sentenced to 48 years in prison.

Obviously my sympathy goes to the victim and her family, but it's sad when two kids just mess up their entire life over some pendejadas.

[font=Comic Sans MS] Why do I get the feeling that Jack Thompson had something to do with this. :Grr:

I really don't think that they were actually trying to hurt the little girl, and it just sucks that they're going to spend a long ass time in prison for something like this. I mean it's bad that she died, but you can't predict that this stuff could of happened. If they didn't care and just wanted to bust a "fatality" on the girl than they never would of tried and attempted CPR.

Just feel really bad for everyone in this situation. :/

I never played Mortal Kombat, by arent the moves used in that game wrestle moves? So couldnt these kids just as easily have gotten the idea to slam into the child from watching TV?

I doubt you can blame one game for this. It's a combination of factors: upbringing, alcohol, imitating pop culture. Unfortunately you do not have to be a pc or videogame player to seriously hurt or kill someone, if only life were that simple: banning games would end murders and killing. But it won't.

Very sad for the entire family, including the half sister who did this.

I haven't played this game since it's early days, but pretty much I would say it's like extreme wrestling type movies, violent, even gory. There have been countless incident's here in the US, and i'm sure elsewere, of kids accidently killing kids from imitating wrestling type moves.
An violent video game makes for an easy target and a good headline 'news story' especially when it generates millions..

the biggest problem here, for these kids, was the alcohol involved and is probably more 'amo' for prosecutors have them charged as adults. Had they not been intoxicated, this story would of had a different ending.
