The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, was founded in San Antonio,Texas in 1967. Now it is among the premier organizations that protects the rights of Mexican-Americans in the United States Of America. Here is a bit of the history of MALDEF.

In addition to its difficulty in gaining traction, some of its San Antonio staff were deemed "militant," a perception that caused the Ford Foundation to recommend moving the headquarters out of the state and replacing Tijerina as executive director.
