Ab Quintanilla Calling out Oscar from La Mafia

Tejano music including Conjunto!

Postby iPedro on Sat, Jun 28 2008, 8:45 PM

Kumbia Kings allstarts, whatever lol. I actually liked AB's sense of humor... that outfit was all out and just kinda different from them lol.
This has to be the strangest battle of the bands though. both groups are not exactly 100% Tejano - both bands gone international. La mafia has so many tejano classics to thier name though, they could probably get by the whole night doing thier oldies - That is probably what AB's point to 'playing' La Mafias "quiero quiero" ( 1985/86) on the little kazoo instrument. Also on another video singing to "Me estoy enamorando" from 1991 album. as if to imply, bring it on, you and your oldies lol.

Who knows. so far, it seems all in good fun.

I saw La Mafia when I was 15 years old. z:: They are legends, Kumbia Kings is garbage.

LMAO, Yeah I was wondering what was up with that shirt. I wonder what's with his obsession with La Mafia bringing back thier old members.

I'd like to see Ruben Vela and the 2G's do this, lol.

You couldn't be MORE wrong. Maybe you have La Mafia confused with Mazz. (although as far as I know there is only ONE former Mazz member in prison and it isn't for life) . If any member of La Mafia has ever had as much as a parking ticket, it never made the news.

La Mafia is one of the most down to earth bands you'd ever want to meet, and a band that should instill pride in every Tejano. I know they make me proud to be a Texan. They were THE band who decided (back in the 80s) to give their MTV generation ROCK STYLE shows, complete with pyrotetitcs, which led the way for other bands like La Fiebre, and La Sombra etc to follow suit. In the 90s THEY are the ones who catipulted Tejano Music into the national and international spotlight. They accomplished this by first going into Mexico, starting out in parking lots, and gradually working their way up to playing in sold out stadiums all over Mexico, opening the door for Selena and everyone who has been down there since. Their 1991 "Estas Tocando Fuego" album was the first album in Tejano history to sell over a million units (at a time when most of the biggest hits were selling 50,000, and on rare occaisions up to 100,000 units), followed up by "Ahora y Siempre" which sold a million and a half. They were THE band who helped Selena get her start by taking her on the road with them from the age of 12, helping her get the kind of exposure that led to her winning TTMA awards (which led to her being "discovered" by Jose Behar of EMI Latin). La Mafia and Selena were the only Tejano artists who were listed in Billboards "Top 10 Latin ARtists of the 90s (with the majority of Selena's sales coming after her tragic death).

They are ambasadors of La Onda, they have taken Tejano Music all over the US, Mexico , Central and South America, to places where no Tejano has gone before, as well as Europe on their USO tours.

They have won numerous awards like 2 grammys, 2 Latin Grammys, 6 Premio Lo Nuestro awards, 12 TTMA awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award and many others and have been inducted into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame.

When they make the news its for the good stuff they do, for the Red Cross and many other charities they are involved in, their USO tours, the awards they win etc, unlike other Tejanos who make the news for child molesttion, drugs, wife-beating, money laundering , drunk driving, failure to pay child support etc.

They are very active and visible in their community. They do a lot for the City of Houston, like public service announcements, special events, and were even instrumental in helping the City of Houston get the contract for the Latin Grammys coming to Houston this year. They have been inducted into the Houston Hall of Fame alongside other famous Houstonians , like astronauts, politicians, actors etc. They have a star on the Houston Hardrock Walk of Fame and 2 of Oscar's Grammys are displayed inside.

The video below is La Mafia's "My Houston" ad, to promote their city, there is also a "My Houston" print ad featuring Oscar that has been in publications all over the country , including the "Wall Street Journal".

The video below talks about a special show that La mafia put on for the children at Shriner's Hospital in Houston. I had the opportunity to attend that show, and the video doesn't really tell the story. It was so moving, the way they interacted with those kids, that I had to fight back the tears.

Pika, I'm not picking on you, because obviously you are out of the loop as to what has been going on with La Mafia, I just want to make sure that whoever may be tuning in knows that La Mafia is a CLASS ACT.

You're right, it is all in fun, that's not to say that La Mafia hasn't had some SERIOUS issues with AB, or that he isn't carrying it a tad bit too far with some of the shots he's getting in, BUT it's about promoting the event which is great PR for both groups, and should give La Onda a shot in the arm, as there really hasn't been any serious "hype" in years and years. It is going to be the event of the year and the only winners will be the fans.

Mafia kicked AB's azz. LOL Yes La Mafia won hands down, but seriously both shows were great. AB brought in Elida Reyna to sing 2 Selena songs, and Siggno's Jesse Turner to sing another song , and some guy he was calling ChiWee to sing "Sabes a Chocalate" , and Mellissa Jimenez to sing the current single with Ricky Rick, and of course he had DJ Kane and dancers, and La Mafia still won. AB hasn't admitted defeat publically but was overheard at the after party saying something like "I knew I was in trouble when y'all opened with a ballad and kicked my azz, a *&^%ING ballad, who would have thought". Anyway, you can read all about on my blog. It's in 3 parts LOL, just so much to tell, so if you decide to drop by there, scroll down to part 1 and if you don't want to read the entire novella, just scroll through it and look at the pictures and read the captions.

A group that isn't hot anymore??????

Well I guess I can see why you would have that perception, since according to your profile you live in the Midwest and you don't list Tejano as one of your favorite styles of music, and you probably haven't kept up and are going only by what you see (and don't see on Mun2 ) , and obviously AB had the same perception.
I'm here to tell you that La Mafia is still hot, and that Mafia Mania is on the rise bigtime. They have continued to draw the masses during this decade in spite of the fact that the radio stations were refusing to play their new music, we're talking there are people out there who still think they brok up because of that (The Tejano stations using the excuse that it "wasn't Tejano enough" , and the Regional Mexican stations using the excuse that they were "too Tejano", those were excuses , there was another force at work there) In the past couple of years that has begun to change, what is left of the Tejano stations have started playing their new music and some of the Regional Mexican stations as well. Anyway, this lack of airplay kept them off of Billboard, and caused them to have less visibility on TV , but in spite of the lack of airplay and the lack of visibility, and with people still thinking they broke up they have still been drawing very large crowds during all these years.
The following is a photo from their appearance at Escapade 2001 in Houston (which holds 7,000 people), which they have packed each time they have headlined there in the past 2 years.

La Mafia is on a roll now, drawing huge crowds in Mexico and all over Texas and other cities in the US. Recently they appeared in San Luis Potosi for the first time in 12 years at a very large club, and people were lined up around the block, they had to close the doors and put big screens outside for the people who couldn't get in.
