This little program lets you do just that. it's so easy to configure... if you can setup an myspace account, you can mess with this.
I've been using this fo a while now. It replaced the old shcool windows98 one I was using before. jeje.
It's 100% free.

Just push the big red button to grab any audio and it saves it as MP3.
--------------
Once you download it and install it, it pretty much is already set to use. you may want to configure it a bit though.
Recording Device: You probably don't have to mess with this. it should be fine.
Recording Mixer make sure it is set to "Stereo Out" this way it lets you record sound coming from your computer. (sound card)
Volume: The volume can be set all the way to min. and still get a good recording... i'm guessing because the sounds are coming from your computers sound card, its probably depends on the main volume level settings of your computer.
So just try to make sure your computers master volume is at a good high level.
also, don't forget to adjust the volume of the player/video/website you are grabbing the audio from...
If your MP3 sounds distorted, try lowering the master volume down a notch.
This program tool will automatically have it set so that the sounds you record are saved as MP3.
I'm not sure why anyone want to record wave or WMA audio files.
The only good thing I can think of, is maybe you have a friend who is on dial up and you want to share a song clip with this person. wma file is a lot lighter then mp3. depending on the quality of the file too though...
You can change the Quality of the mp3.wave/wma file.
by default it is set to record as MP3 with 160kbps as the quality level and that is pretty good.
you can go higher then that if you'd like. just be aware that you might end up with a 10mb file for a 3 min song
This is the front part. easy to find where you stored your downloads. easy, easy.
Quick note! When installing, your anti virus software may pickup virus warning. I'm using avast anti vrus. your software may or maynot pick it up. or maybe it could just be me lol. but just to be safe, scan your computer or your C:/ Program files/Audio recorder for FREE folders. It's always a good rule of thumb to scan your computer for viruses anyways, and downloading stuff on the Internet is never guaranteed to be 'safe'.
Enjoy!

TROUBLE SHOOTING:
----------------------
If it's not picking up any audio...
Double click on your speaker icon
The Volume Control Panel shows up.
At the top menu click on Options and go to Properties
The Properties dialog box opens up.
Make sure to click on recording and it doesn't matter what you select, as long as Stereo Out is 'checked'. Click OK
And just make sure Stereo Out is selected. that's it!
*By the way, the volume slide on Stereo Out also controls the volume to the Audio Recorder.
If you still can't get audio to record... then you have issues... big issues.
