Chocolate was born in Pre-Hispanic Mexico. Aztec Culture was the follower of the tradition inherited by the Mayas, who a long time before, used chocolate as currency and food. For Aztecs, cocoa was Quetzalcoatl's gift, who at the time of being expelled from Paradise , promised his people that he would return. When Hernán Cortés appeared on the Empire's shores, they thought that he was Quetzalcoatl's reincarnation, so he was graciously welcomed with chocolate in a gold glass, the "Gods' Food".
After having been the Kings' Official Drink and of the Court's in the New Spain and Europe , symbol of distinction and elegance, at the end of the XVIII Century, chocolate started being prepared with milk and sugar. It is not until the early years of the XIX Century when chocolate is manufactured in the shape of tablets, such as we know it today.
Over the years Mexicans have continued the tradition of drinking the food of the Gods. Much like the chocolate drink of the Spaniards, Mexicans Style-Table Chocolate is a natural product containing sugar, cacao, cinnamon and almonds. |
